The Cottages at Orcas Landing is family owned and operated by the Carter family. Many eons (about 25 years) ago, the Carter family moved to the Seattle area, bouncing around for a while before finally landing in Lake Stevens. The family didn’t have much money but, when they did, they hopped on the ferry from Anacortes to the San Juan Islands. The patriarch of the family, Jerry, had a quiet dream to one day be able to retire on Orcas Island.
Fast forward to 2014, and the Carter family had scratched and crawled their way to financial security. When perusing realty sites, still dreaming what 25 years ago seemed like a pipe dream, Jerry found a handful of quaint cottages on sale just by the ferry dock. One to retire in turned into one and a guest house. One and a guest house turned into two rentals. A third purchase allowed for one to retire in and two rentals. And thus The Cottages at Orcas Landing was born.
The cottages were purchased from Mamie Forbes, an Orcas Island staple, a cornerstone of the community, and namesake of Mamie’s Restaurant (which used to be located nearby). Within these cottages, you can see the markings of all the love and care she and her family poured into every inch over 30 years. The Carter family hopes not to cover those markings but simply to add a coat or two of their own passion and enthusiasm in an effort to create a guest experience that will showcase all this beautiful island has to offer.
“My boyfriend and I had the perfect weekend getaway thanks to Rebecca and her brother, Chris. The space was everything we wanted: cozy, clean, and quiet! The view was incredible! Rebecca & Chris went out of their way to make us comfortable and happy. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to travel to Orcas Island.”
